Chapter Fourteen

DELILAH’S BED AND Breakfast was one of the old mansions in town that had found second life as B&B. Some of the mansions in Mirror Falls’ prosperous history had been converted into apartments and others were renovated into offices for professionals. Trilby’s office was in one such mansion that he shared with another lawyer, a chiropractor, and an accountant.

I enjoyed my stay at Delilah’s despite the sleepless nights due to the number of antiques our hostess had used to furnish her comfortable hostelry.

I had talked myself into believing that Hunt had left when I caught sight of a man sitting on Delilah’s veranda with a bottle of wine on the table beside him and a glass. He was wearing the typical superstar disguise; a hoodie pulled over his head and a pair of sunglasses. His jean-clad legs stretched out in front of him and his feet rested on the railing that surrounded the porch. If that wasn’t enough to give him away, he was leafing through a spiral-bound script.

“Hunt!” I shouted furiously from the window of Gideon’s truck. “Hunt Greystoke, damn you! What are you still doing here?”

The legs flew off the railing. He jumped to his feet, swiveling to the left and right as though paparazzi were about to leap out from the bushes.

Gideon pulled up and I jumped out of the truck before we’d come to a full stop. I had a moment of embarrassment when I struggled to open the gate until, frustrated, I vaulted over it and sprinted up the path to the veranda.

“Sixth,” he hissed. “No one knows I’m here and I want to keep it that way. Keep your voice down. What’s the problem? So I stayed a couple of days more. I like it here. I can hear myself think.”

I was conscious of Gideon opening the gate effortlessly and strolling along the path with the calm of a Zen master.

Hunt pulled me in front of him like a human shield and looked over my shoulder. “Who is that? Who have you told about me, Gracie? Whatever happened to the seal of client confidentiality?”

“I’m not a lawyer and I’m not your doctor. I’m a psychic. I told you to go back to Los Angeles but here you are and you’ll never guess what happened.”

“Of course I’ll never guess. I have no idea what you’re talking about. I don’t know why you’re so upset to be honest. My script arrived today and I’m studying it. Have a glass of wine. You look like you could use it. You seem tense.”

Gideon approached us with a look of bemusement. “My name is Gideon Tate. I’m a friend of Gracie’s.”

“I’m a client of Gracie’s and I’m not comfortable giving my name, I hope you don’t mind.”

“Oh, for Pete’s sake! This is Hunt Greystoke, the actor I was telling you about. Hunt, sit down. We have to talk. Where were you the night you stalked me to the flower shop? You told me you had just arrived.”

“I did. After I left your place, I came back here and I’ve been here ever since.
